Governors Camp | Masai Mara National Reserve

Governors camp is located in the Masai Mara National Reserve along the banks of the Mara River. This camp is one of the oldest camps in this reserve. The camp is found in the game viewing areas in other locations such as in Rwanda and Kenya. Has luxury tents and offers good wildlife viewing opportunity. This camp is sometimes referred to as the main Governors.

The camp is the main location of a giant camp split into three neighboring sites of the main Governors Camp, Little Governors and Governors II Moran camp which are all located along the Mara River in the northwestern part of the Masai Mara National Reserve. This camp was reserved exclusively for Kenya’s colonial governors which is the reason behind the name of the camp. The Governors Camp in the Masai Mara National reserve was created in 1972 and it set luxury standards in their camps and is still among Africa’s best.

Today the Governors camp can be visited by different groups of people visiting the Masai Mara reserve such as couples, family, friends as well as tourists.

This luxury camp occupies the best wildlife viewing location within the Masai Mara reserve during safaris. Wildlife species which can be seen along its shores include hippos, crocodiles, buffalos, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, waterbucks, hartebeests, wildebeests, lions, hyenas, leopards among others.

Different bird species can also be seen along the Mara river such as secretary bird, saddle-billed storks, turacos, vulture guinea fowls, yellow billed storks, kingfishers, lesser flamingos, herons, grey crowned cranes among others.

Tourists can also enjoy the wildebeest migration during the river crossing along the Mara river which takes place during the months of July to October. 

Reservation terms at the Governors camp

The Governors camp accepts payments for rooms at their camps by both credit cards and cash for various currencies. However, travelers’ checks are not accepted by the camp during the making of payments for the rooms.

Tourists can choose the type of room they wish to stay in during their safari. The rooms available for guests staying at the Governors camp include family tents which are available for tourists in groups as well as guests who travel with children.

There are about 37 tents of the Governors camp which are lined along the banks of the Mara River. Other tents are found in the forest while other tourists staying at this camp can also enjoy views of the open plains in the Masai Mara reserve.

Standard tents are also available for guests staying at the Governors camp and they consist of twin or double beds and other facilities such as verandahs, bathrooms built in the tents, bathtubs among others.

The facilities which are found in the camp for tourists include ensuite bathrooms, a private verandah and beautiful views of the rest of the reserve such as the Mara river where different wildlife species can be seen drinking and grazing along the shores.

Services at Governors camp

Services offered by the Governors camp include spa, facials, manicures, pedicures. This camp was also rewarded for sustainable tourism practices and eco-tourism in Kenya. Other services offered by this camp include a mess tent with a bar and deck, a dining tent, a souvenir shop and a reception.

The Governors camp also organizes different wildlife viewing activities for their guests to engage in such as game drives which take place in the morning and in the late afternoon. Guests can also engage in balloon safaris from the launch site of the camp.

The camp also practices sustainability which involves leaving a low environmental footprint and Governors camp also has a zero-waste policy that involves both the camp staff and the locals. The hot water used by the guests in the camp is heated by using recycled fuel to reduce the dependence on fossil fuel.

Laundry services are also available for guests staying at the camp and washing powder is also provided for the guests in their tents.

Meal plan

Meals offered at the camp are prepared to suit the needs of the guests and to provide maximum satisfaction during their safari and they include breakfast which consists of continental and full English buffet.

Other meals offered at Governors camp include lunch which is served as a buffet with fresh salads and the dinner which is prepared for guests staying at this camp is a la carte which is served in the dining tent.

Tourists who engage in activities such as game drives in Masai Mara National Reserve at different times of the day such as a full day or half-day game drives and staying at the Governors camp are provided with picnics or packed lunches. The camp also provided bush meals that are available at an extra cost.

Guests who have special dietary meals are also catered for and their meals are provided on request to the camp. Dining takes place both indoors and outdoors on individual tables and guests can also have meals in their own tents upon request in advance.

This camp also caters for the needs of children who are staying in their accommodation facility and they engage in games such as playing with toys and puzzles under the care of the staff under the housekeeping department. 

Security at the camp

Guests staying at the camp are encouraged to leave their valuables at the reception. The camp also provides a safe bag and key and the valuables are kept in a central safe in order to minimize cases of losing the valuables of the guests during their safaris.

Guests who have children are also encouraged to supervise their children since different wildlife species roam close to the camp which puts them at risk.

How to get there

Tourists can access the Governors camp by flight followed by a car transfer. Flights are available from Nairobi and tourists can use different airlines to access this camp such as Governors Aviation to the Musiara airstrip. The drive to the camp has beautiful views of the trees down the entrance to the parking lot.

Flights are available from Wilson airport direct to the camp as well as from Loldia house. Some of the types of flights offered for guests staying at the camp include private charters.
