Detailed itinerary of 4 days Bwindi and Lake Bunyonyi safari from Kigali, Rwanda

Day 1: Kigali to Bwindi via Virunga Ranges

To start off your safari, you will be picked from Kigali International airport or hotel in Kigali city by our safari driver-guide. He will give you a short briefing about the safari and embark on a drive of approximately 6 hours to Bwindi impenetrable national park, the drive takes you past Ruhengeri – home to the Volcanoes national park on Rwanda side, and you will have a stopover at the Twin lakes of Nulera and Ruhondo.

Continue to the Cyanika Border and after finishing the formalities, continue to Bwindi impenetrable national park, along the way you will enjoy spectacular views of the 3 volcanoes of Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhavura that are protected in the Mgahinga Gorilla national park of Uganda. You will arrive in the park in the evening, check into your lodge for dinner and overnight as you prepare for the next day gorilla trek.

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi

Today is the climax of the safari, wake up early for breakfast then transfer to the park’s headquarters for briefing about mountain gorilla trekking, be grouped into 8 people and be assigned a gorilla group to trek then hike into the forests of Bwindi looking for mountain gorillas.

A gorilla trek takes about 4-6 hours and upon meeting mountain gorillas you will have a full hour to watch them as they go on with their daily chores, you can also take pictures as long as your flashlight is off. After meeting the gorillas, you will retreat to the briefing point where you will be rewarded with gorilla trekking certificates which you will carry back home as a souvenir and proof that you made it to the gorillas. After the trekking you will embark on a journey to Lake Bunyonyi – The Switzerland of Africa, have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 3: Full Day Adventure on Lake Bunyonyi

After breakfast, you will checkout of the lodge and head to the Lake Bunyonyi – The Second deepest Lake in Africa for a full day of adventure, while at the lake you will be welcomed by the sounds of the birds. You have a canoe trip whereby you will be able to explore the 29 islands found in the lake, spot various birds and communities. After the canoes you will lunch and in the evening you will go for a community/nature walk through the Batwa and Abaheesi communities. Have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 4: Return to Kigali

After breakfast, you will checkout of your lodge and embark on a return trip to Kigali City, you will a short Kigali City tour visit the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Site, Caplaki Market for Crafts and Souvenir Shopping. Drop off at the airport for your departure flight back home.
