Detailed itinerary of 10 Days of Best of Uganda Safari

Day 1: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park – Stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – Visit the top of the falls.

To start your safari, you will meet your guide and transfer to Murchison Falls National Park with a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary where you will track rhinos in foot. You will then have lunch in Masindi and proceed to the park, on arrival you will proceed to the top of Murchison Falls. Here you will see the River Nile squeezing through a narrow gorge before plunging down with deafening sound leaving behind beautiful rainbow. Continue to your lodge for check-in, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Game drive and a Boat cruise along the Nile

Wake up early for breakfast and head to the park for an early morning game drive, during the game drive you will enjoy seeing several animals including lions, giraffes, hyenas, elephants, buffaloes and countless antelopes among others.

After the game drive, return to the lodge for lunch and short rest. In the afternoon you will go for a boat cruise along River Nile, lookout for hippos and crocodiles in the waters and elephants as well as buffaloes drinking water along the shores of the river. The boat cruise ends at the bottom of the falls which gives a magnificent view of the falls and take amazing pictures. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Transfer to Kibale Forest – Visit the Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary

Have a leisure breakfast, checkout of the lodge and embark on a journey to Kibale Forest National Park. The journey takes you through the beautiful and scenic countryside, watch the majestic Rwenzori Mountain ranges that provide stunning views.

Have lunch in Fort Portal and proceed to the park for check-in, in the afternoon you will go for a Bigodi Swamp walk. The sanctuary is home to over 10 primate species and a rich birdlife which you will see during the guided walk, head to your lodge for check-in, have dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale – Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Wake up early, meet your guide and transfer to the park’s headquarters for briefing about chimpanzee trekking, a senior ranger will take you through rules and regulations to follow then enter into the forests looking for chimpanzees. The trek takes approximately 30 minutes to 6 hours or more depending on the movement of the chimpanzees and where they spent their previous night.

When you locate the chimpanzees you are allowed to spend only one hour observing them groom each and go on with their life in the forest, you are allowed to take as many photos as possible. Trek back to the park headquarters, meet your guide and head to the lodge for lunch.

Later checkout and embark on a journey to Queen Elizabeth National Park, the drive takes two hours arriving in the park in the evening, check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5-6: Morning Game drive – Launch cruise along the Kazinga Channel

Wake up early for breakfast and head to the park’s Kasenyi Plains for a morning game drive, the area offers excellent chances of seeing buffaloes, lions, elephants, leopards, antelopes, hyenas and several bird species.

Return to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon, go for a launch cruise along the Kazinga Channel – a natural water channel connecting Lake George to Lake Edward. As you calmly sail, you will enjoy sightings of schools of hippos and Nile crocodiles, buffaloes and elephants and several water birds along the shores of the channel. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7: Game drive to see tree climbing lions – Transfer to Bwindi

Wake up early for breakfast and head to Ishasha Sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park for a game drive, lookout for the rare tree climbing lions lounging on tree branches. Then proceed to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with en-route lunch.

Arrive in the park in the evening, check-in at the lodge and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Have dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Gorilla Tracking – Visit the Batwa in Bwindi

Wake up early for breakfast, meet your guide and head to the park headquarters with your packed lunch box. Here you will have a briefing session about the dos and don’ts of mountain gorilla trekking, be grouped into 8 people and assigned a gorilla family to trek.

Gorillas

Enter into the misty forest looking for mountain gorillas, the trek takes approximately 30 minutes to 6 hours through uneven terrain depending on the movement of the gorilla and where they spent their previous night. When you locate the gorilla family, you are allowed to spend only one hour in the presence of the gorillas watching them go on with their life in the forest, groom each other, female gorillas taking care of their young ones and take as many photos as you wish for memory purposes.

Trek back to the park headquarters, meet your guide and head to the Batwa Community for a cultural experience. Interact with the Batwa elders, visit the medicine man where you will learn how various plants are used to cure diseases, be entertained by local dances and drama among others. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 9: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi – Afternoon boat ride

Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi, the deepest lake in Uganda and the second deepest in Africa, the journey takes you through the terraced green hills commonly referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa”.

When you arrive, you will check in at the lodge and have some rest as you wait for your lunch. In the afternoon you will have a boat ride exploring the numerous islands found in the lake and learning about their fascinating stories.
